How to Install Shiplap in Your Home | Part Two

Shiplap can transform your interior dramatically.  Where once this style was just used to side ships and barns, now this technique has become a popular choice for interior design.  If you are ready to make that “x-factor” your room is missing and take your design to the next level, shiplap may be the perfect addition to your design. The installation can be challenging so remember if you feel uncomfortable, it is best to hire a professional.

Once you have obtained all of the proper tools for installation (Part One), you are ready to begin your prep work.  Prep work can ensure your job goes smoothly once you begin your installation.  Make sure you follow all the proper procedures to create an easy installation process.

Prep Work

Like any job, prep work is essential for making sure your project turns out perfect.  Start by removing all the moldings around the room by using your prybar and hammer.  Be careful removing your quarter round because it can easily be broken if removed too aggressively.  Start in one corner of your room and follow the circumference of the area.  Use your marker and numerically write a smaller number on the back of each piece you remove so you can remember the order when reinstalling your baseboards and trim.  Next, use your stud finder to locate the studs in your room and mark each with your pencil.  Use your chalk line to draw a line all the way up your wall so you can remember where each stud is located.  If your wall has any outlet covers or light switch covers, use your screwdriver and remove them.

The prep work will lay the foundation for your installation. You may also want to wipe down your walls before beginning the project.  Once you start your installation, you will never be able to clean under them again.  Just use a damp sponge remove all dust and dirt.

You are ready to begin your installation now.  Check out Part 3 to find out learn more on the procedures of doing your own shiplap.
